Background

The client requested a complete refurbishment of a cherished, vintage garden bench. Initial inspection revealed significant wear and damage, particularly to the fragile metal legs, which required extensive repair to restore the bench's functionality and appearance.

Process Overview

  1. Initial Preparation
The bench was carefully dismantled to assess the condition of its components. Fragile and corroded metal legs were identified as a key area requiring major restoration.

  2. Metalwork Restoration:
The metal legs were shot blasted to remove rust and old coatings. Due to severe corrosion, the majority of the leg structures were replaced with new steel. All three legs were straightened to match the original bench design. The restored and new steel components were re-blasted, zinc-coated for durability, and finished with a dark green powder coat.

  3. Woodwork Replacement
New Iroko hardwood was selected for its durability and aesthetic compatibility. The wood was cut into slats, meticulously sanded, and treated to protect against weathering. The slats were fitted to the bench frame using stainless steel fittings for a polished and long-lasting finish.

Results

The restored bench now stands as a centerpiece in its mature garden setting. Combining the timeless charm of the original design with modern durability, it has been transformed into a stunning, functional feature.
